A Larger Circle

Curators Lacy Mitcham and Toni Collums Roberts bring together adjunct professors from five higher learning institutions in the Greater Memphis Area. A Larger Circle celebrates these part-time/contingent faculty and their contribution to the cultural production of this city as both artists and educators.

“When my brothers try to draw a circle to exclude me, I shall draw a larger circle to include them.”

House Concert feat. The PRVLG

With Christian on bass and Christopher on drums and both singing simultaneously, the pair craft a truly authentic live show which showcases monster musicianship that is truly one of a kind.

Creating a timeless sound that seamlessly mixes a vintage flare with a contemporary delivery, this set of twins certainly bring an element to music that is unheard of. A blend of Indie pop-esque melodies with some funk, soul, jazz, and r&b make for a Memphis version of Prince.

Suggested donation of $20 to benefit Music Export Memphis.

Music Export Memphis creates opportunities for Memphis musicians to showcase their music outside the city, driving tourism, talent attraction and economic development, and giving artists a needed engine and platform to grow their careers and elevate Memphis’ profile as a contemporary music city.

Native Son

Soul Owner is excited to host artist and community organizer  Brandon Gaia Marshall (aka NOSEY42) for a showing of the acclaimed muralist’s fine art. Native Son, is a collection of collage and paintings with visual sampling compositions that pay homage to a modern pre-internet nostalgia.

Specializing in murals with a focus on community engagement, Marshall’s work has rarely been seen in a gallery setting. Native Son, is a fresh, graphic, sensual, and energetic collection of his fine art. “While all visual elements possess unique characteristics and identities the barrage of organic and inorganic material fall together into a harmonious totality. Images are dissected and decontextualized to relay moments from our collective subconscious that we all inherently know to be true.  In this way the work imitates life, as the paintings reveal our lives to be a conglomeration of our own bittersweet and surreal milestones.”  (Native Son artist statement, NOSEY42)

Writer's Talk: On Beginnings

Two years ago, Ellie Norris found herself on the cusp of turning thirty and in the throes of a coinciding identity crisis. She was a stay-at-home mother of two, married, financially stable, but mentally quite the opposite. Convinced that a highly successful new career would be the solution, her job search quickly shifted to a quest for purpose rather than profit.

Written in a self-deprecating, Southern tone, her memoir, Thirty, takes on universal truths of womanhood with humor and heart. The timely story chronicles a journey of physical, political, and spiritual transformation sparked by the profound love between mothers and daughters.

Join Ellie for her first reading of this memoir and a conversation about beginnings, creativity and facing your fears. Snacks and refreshments served. Free and open to the public.

Art Opening: On Beginnings

Think on beginnings. When was the last time you started something? Possibly, this morning when you awoke to a brand new day? We begin every day but rarely take the time to appreciate the courage that propels us forward into uncharted territory. There is humbleness and grace in surrendering to this unknown. What if we began each day with the humbleness of a true beginner (a newb, a rookie, a virgin, a first timer)? It could open us to a deeper connection to the present and to the small moments that teach us, guide us, and allow us to grow.

This is how Soul Owner approaches our first opening…with the grace and humbleness of a newb.

Native Memphians Sophie Bracewell, Camille Cohen, Anne Fletcher, Alex Heflin, Ashlee Rivalto and Kayla Stark were challenged (as all creators are) to navigate new ideas, blank pages, white spaces, fresh canvas, raw concepts, and raw emotions with grace and humility. Mediums include graphite, ink, oil, acrylic, gouache, photography, and ceramic. Price points for young collectors. Open to the community.
